Mira Costa is a community of learners where each member has the opportunity to achieve personal, social, creative, and academic excellence

 

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mira Costa school community strives to maximize the unique potential of each student, to cultivate the skills essential for lifelong learning and to nurture responsible citizenship. Our tradition of excellence provides a positive learning environment, which includes:

  • A wide range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities
  • Clear expectations for academic achievement and responsible behavior
  • Respect for people, property, and ideas
  • Programs that develop the skills of communication, teamwork, problem-solving, technology, and information management
  • A dedicated and supportive staff, parents, and community partners who focus on "students first."

2008-2009 CRITICAL ACADEMIC NEEDS (CANs)


I.     Data shows that there is a need to provide support, opportunities, and alternatives that improve student academic achievement especially addressing the needs of low-achieving students

II.         Data shows that there is a need to develop accountability amongst all stakeholders for student work habits, attendance, time management and self-advocacy.

III. Data shows that there is a need to develop the school community in terms of communication, morale and involvement through increased opportunities for collaboration of all stakeholders.


2008-2009 EXPECTED SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING RESULTS(ESLRs)

Mira Costa High School graduates, in becoming lifelong learners, will be:

1.   Effective Communicators who:

a. demonstrate skills in reading, writing, and mathematics and apply them across the curriculum

b. articulate ideas clearly and effectively through oral, written, and artistic expression and creative means.

c. read, listen, and respond effectively and critically

d. use technology ethically to access and utilize information

e. are self-advocates

2.   Critical Thinkers who:

a. work independently and collaboratively

b. solve problems effectively by employing high-level, critical thinking skills

c. identify, assess, analyze, synthesize, use and cite resources and information productively

d. explore, discuss, and demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues and behavior

3.   Self-Directed Learners who:

a. work toward maximizing potential by setting challenging and achievable goals

b. demonstrate personal accountability and principled behavior

c. exhibit good study/work habits that include regular school/work attendance and effective time management

d. monitor, assess, and reflect upon their academic growth and development

e. demonstrate academic responsibility by meeting or exceeding the standards set by faculty and staff

4.   Responsible Citizens who:

a. are proactive in taking responsibility for their own actions

b. acknowledge and respect cultural and ideological diversity and individual differences

c. participate in community service

d. respect property and natural resources

e. demonstrate awareness of a healthy and productive lifestyle .

f. continue to represent MCHS on and off campus
