A Message from The Director of Athletics Dear Mustang Fans & Family,
Welcome back for another exciting year of Mustang Athletics! We are a highly successful school, both academically and athletically, and our success is due in part to the dedication of the coaches and parents to the programs and the student-athletes. I am proud to represent Mira Costa as your Director of Athletics and I look forward to working with the athletes, coaches, and booster clubs to continue our long tradition of athletic and academic success. The achievements of our many talented Mustang athletic teams helped Mira Costa to be named number 11 in ESPN's Fab 50 Top High School Athletic Programs in the nation for the 2008-2009 year! I've seen many of our coaches and kids working hard all summer and I assure you, the 2009-2010 year will be one to remember.
I am happy to report that we'll be incorporating the themes of the Pursing Victory With Honor campaign (PVWH) into our athletics program this year. This successful nationwide program reinforces the need for sportsmanship in educational athletics. The PVWH program is a portion of the larger Character Counts! program that we will be implementing school wide in the coming years. We will begin our implementation of PVWH with a mandatory training for the head coaches on Monday, September 14th; we will follow with trainings for assistant coaches, student-athletes, and parents in the following weeks and months. Good sportsmanship, along with all its values, is perhaps the most important reason we sponsor athletics. Taking a leading role in our sportsmanship efforts will convey a powerful message to our players. It's at the local level where each school's efforts will blossom into success. As a society, we're constantly bombarded with the message that winning is everything. It is my belief that winning, as a goal unto itself, is misdirected. True success involves the development of sport and life skills, which can make players and spectators feel like winners after every game, regardless of the score. Good sportsmanship requires as much work as any play or skill we can teach an athlete. More importantly, the values instilled through good sportsmanship will serve our students and our community for years to come. I thank you for your involvement and hope that the upcoming year will be a rewarding one. I send heartfelt wishes of good luck to the entire coaching staff and all of the dedicated players and parents in the 2009-2010 year. Go Mustangs! Paula Spence
